The Department had a very humble beginning. During its inception, Biology as a subject was introduced in I.Sc. course with only 75 students in the academic session 1949- 1950. Dr. B. Bhattacharjee, a local Physician, rendered his service on honorary basis as Lecturer of Biology. Thereafter, Botany as a Pass-subject was introduced in B.Sc. Course during the academic session 1960-61.
After a decade, Botany as Honours-subject was introduced in B.Sc. Course during 1970-71 session. Over the years, it has become a full fledged department with undergraduate courses. The department is going to flourish further with the introduction of Post graduate courses and doctoral research in Botany in the near future. Our vision is to explore but not to exploit the plant world. Our vision is also to be a centre of excellence particularly in Plant Taxonomy and Biosystematics, Microbial Sciences, Plant Biochemistry and field work based Ecological studies.
